South West English and Maths Network Event Plymouth, Friday 7th December, 2018

South West network event for English and maths in the post-16 sector, open to all those who are working with post-16 learners including colleges, training providers and voluntary sector organisations. This event is for teachers, trainers, managers, English and maths leads, and anyone involved in English or maths delivery. The day will include updates and information on English and maths support and resources, including preparing for the new functional skills, maths and English resources, and the opportunity to network and share good practice in the region. 

AoC English and Maths Conference London, Tuesday 5th February, 2019

AoC’s English and Maths Conference is an invaluable national event that brings together innovative speakers offering hands-on practical advice and learnings. It gives delegates a key chance to discuss with peers solutions to the English and maths challenges every college faces. Attend for a unique mix of strategic guidance on current policy and practical sessions.

It highlights and summarises what we believe to be the key issues, and how our analysis of them informs our practical work with teachers and senior leaders.

Decisions on Functional Skills reform Department for Education, July 2018. Functional Skills Qualifications (FSQs) in English and mathematics are being reformed. This document sets out The Department for Education's final decisions on the rules and guidance that will apply to the new FSQs in English and mathematics which will be introduced for first teaching in September 2019.

Continual professional development

Current opportunities for continual professional development relating to English in Further Education

English Pathways Free online modules and self-evaluation tools to develop your personal English skills at level 2, with some extension to level 3 (both Functional Skills and GCSE). Engagement in these tools will guide practitioners in prioritising developmental needs which can then be supported by the courses provided by the Education and Training Foundation.

Teaching Functional Skills English Level 5 CPD module Coventry, Friday 14th December, 2018, Manchester, Friday 11th January, 2019 or London, Tuesday 29th January, 2019

This course is aimed at both new teachers of Functional Skills English, and those already teaching but possibly recently transferred from other areas, including vocational teachers and assessors. It is particularly suitable for those who do not currently hold a subject-specific teaching qualification in English. The course will ensure that those responsible for teaching Functional Skills English are conversant with effective practice and have the confidence to teach Functional English to learners with skills below Level 2, and support their achievement. Exciting new resources for the management and/or delivery of English in Further Education

NEW! Current Practice in Using a System of Phonics with Post-16 Learners The ETF commissioned this research to review the extent to which phonics approaches are currently used with Entry level learners across the sector and to identify how adult literacy tutors might be supported to use phonics approaches effectively. In turn, the research has reviewed the existing evidence base on the efficacy of using phonics approaches with adult learners, and explored the context in which adult literacy teaching at Entry levels takes place.

NEW! Teaching students the writing process & how to avoid plagiarism Posters developed by Hackney Community College as part of an OTLA project for learners on the writing process and how to avoid plagiarism.

NEW! OTLA case study of an operational project on paired peer observations led by Redbridge Institute The aim of this OTLA project was to create an opportunity for organisational culture change in all five organisations of the East London Quality Partnership, with regard to continuous professional development (CPD) for teachers in ESOL and English. The project used the catalyst of undertaking collaborative, ungraded paired peer observations across the five partner organisations.
