Key publications for practitioners delivering and/or managing English courses in Further Education

NEW! Functional Skills Reform Factsheet English and mathematics Functional Skills qualifications are both respected and well-known. They help students to gain important real world skills for the future. Starting in September 2019, the current qualifications will be replaced by reformed Functional Skills qualifications to make them even more relevant and credible for the world of work. The content of the reformed qualifications is more specific and detailed than before. It will be easier to compare Functional Skills with other qualifications.

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) Attainment Gap Report This report assesses the attainment gap through the lens, first, of children and young people; and secondly, of schools, as well as early years and post16 settings. It highlights and summarises what we believe to be the key issues, and how our analysis of them informs our practical work with teachers and senior leaders.

Continual professional development

Current opportunities for continual professional development relating to English in Further Education

English Pathways Free online modules and self-evaluation tools to develop your personal English skills at level 2, with some extension to level 3 (both Functional Skills and GCSE). Engagement in these tools will guide practitioners in prioritising developmental needs which can then be supported by the courses provided by the Education and Training Foundation.

Designing a supportive curriculum for maths and English for lower attainers 1.00-2.30pm on Thursday 14th February, 2019 This interactive webinar will examine a range of practical strategies practitioners can adopt to design a supportive curriculum in maths and English that will encourage lower attainers to persevere and to make good progress. We will examine the evidence about what works and share positive experiences with other practitioners. We will pay attention to the difference between providing a framework for learning and slavishly following exam criteria and past question revision.

Spotlight on maths and English CPD and resources to support apprenticeship delivery and gateway 10-11.30am on Thursday 28th February, 2019 This interactive webinar will examine a range of CPD and resources available through the Education and Training Foundation to support maths and English within apprenticeship delivery. It will also help you plan a programme of support for staff involved in math and English support, teaching and embedding.

Improving Assessment for Learning (maths and English) 10-11.30am on Friday 8th March, 2019 The aim of the interactive webinar is to introduce effective practice in assessment and tracking apprentices' maths and English.

Exciting new resources for the management and/or delivery of English in Further Education

NEW! Current Practice in Using a System of Phonics with Post-16 Learners The ETF commissioned this research to review the extent to which phonics approaches are currently used with Entry level learners across the sector and to identify how adult literacy tutors might be supported to use phonics approaches effectively. In turn, the research has reviewed the existing evidence base on the efficacy of using phonics approaches with adult learners, and explored the context in which adult literacy teaching at Entry levels takes place.

NEW! Teaching students the writing process & how to avoid plagiarism Posters developed by Hackney Community College as part of an OTLA project for learners on the writing process and how to avoid plagiarism.

NEW! OTLA case study of an operational project on paired peer observations led by Redbridge Institute The aim of this OTLA project was to create an opportunity for organisational culture change in all five organisations of the East London Quality Partnership, with regard to continuous professional development (CPD) for teachers in ESOL and English. The project used the catalyst of undertaking collaborative, ungraded paired peer observations across the five partner organisations.
